Makers Mark
Before commissioning a piece of work, it is useful to have an idea of style and budget as this gives Bromley a starting point. For example, a 3ft gate can vary in price considerably depending on the material, style and the finish chosen.

Bromley can base the design on the client's own ideas or on something shown on this website which could be reproduced, modified or developed following discussion.

At this stage, a visit to the Smithy to discuss your requirements may be appropriate or a site visit in order to get a feel for the surroundings. A design can then be developed further and with feedback from the client either refined or accepted. Sample pieces can be made at this stage if needed.

Once a design is agreed upon, a quotation can be given together with terms of business and payment schedules.

Materials

The choice of material will be considered at the design stage. We work mainly in mild steel and stainless steel, sometimes a blend of both or used in conjunction with each other.

Forging

Steel is heated in the forge to a high temperature in order for it to become soft enough to be shaped by hammering. This process gives the metal a distinctive surface texture, each hammer blow leaving its mark and a genuine individuality to the piece of work.

Finish

Forged metalwork has a rich and natural surface texture that will need some degree of protection to give durability and a no maintenance finish. Bromley will be happy to discuss the range of options available to you at the design stage. Some information regarding finish can be found on the Information page.
